“Do you mind if I sit here?” I asked, shuffling to the other end of a three-person bench.
We sat there - 2 strangers without small talk, screens or introductions.
Wind at our backs.
Sun on our faces.
Eyes resting on a beautiful vista.
My mind was busy with everything and nothing. I didn’t think much of the moment. I certainly didn’t name it.
Ten minutes later, the stranger stood, stretched out his hand and said,
“Thanks brother for sharing a moment of peace together”.
He climbed into his ute and got on with his day.
It was only then that it landed.
We hadn’t shared stories.
We hadn’t exchanged names.
We hadn’t tried to connect.
And yet, we had.
Two humans, side by side.
Unconnected in every way except the one that mattered.
The moment we were in.
We often think connection requires effort, conversation, vulnerability, or time. Sometimes it does.
But sometimes, connection is simply co-presence.
Being here.
With another.
Without agenda.
No fixing.
No impressing.
No scrolling past the moment.
Just sharing the same patch of sun.
The same breath of wind.
The same now.
So, here’s the whisper.
You don’t always have to do more to feel connected.
Sometimes, you just have to stay.
Stay a little longer.
Sit beside someone without needing anything from them.
Let peace be enough.
> Where in my life am I rushing past moments that could be quietly meaningful if I stayed a little longer?
> When was the last time I shared space with someone without needing to speak, perform, or explain myself?
> What happens in me when I allow connection to be simple rather than earned?
> How often do I let my attention fully rest in the moment I’m already in
> Who might benefit not from my advice or effort but from my calm presence?
You’ll never know when someone might carry that moment with them far longer than you realise.
