On Thursday 11 September 2025, it’s R U OK? day in Australia.

A single day dedicated to reminding us that every day is the right day to ask ‘Are you OK?’

Compassion starts with a meaningful conversation whenever you spot the signs that someone in your circle may be struggling.

Some conversations change nothing. Some change everything.

Most of us wait for the “right time” to ask a real question. We circle it. We soften it. We tell ourselves, “They look busy,” or “I’ll text later.” Meanwhile, someone we care about is walking around with a heavy backpack you can’t see.

RUOK? Day is a simple invitation to practise a powerful habit: ask, listen, follow up.

Try a 3-minute courage check-in:

1. Ask once, simply: “Hey, I’ve noticed you’ve seemed a bit off/quiet/not yourself lately. Are you OK?”

2. Get curious: “What’s been hardest?” (Then stop talking).

3. Go one layer deeper: “And what else?” (Hold the silence).

4. Anchor next step: “Would it help to chat again tomorrow? I’m here.”

What makes this work isn’t perfect words. It’s presence - your presence, your calm, your attention, your willingness to sit alongside the messy middle.

You don’t have to fix; you get to witness.

You don’t need a script; you need a moment.

If you’re the one carrying the backpack today, here’s your permission slip: you don’t need to be “strong” alone. Strong and supported is stronger. Find one person. Tell them one true sentence. Let the next sentence find you both.

Small question. Full attention. Real follow-up. That’s how ordinary moments become lifelines.
