I tried to catch a falling ear pod the other day. Bad idea.
What started as a casual fumble turned into a comedic juggle.
It ricocheted off my hand, bounced off the edge of my desk, hit my chair, and finally settled under the wheel of a heater in my office.
Had I not seen it fall, I’d have no idea where it landed. I wouldn’t have believed it could land where it did.
Had I just let it fall? It would've landed safely on the desk.
That little dance reminded me of something bigger:
Sometimes, our attempts to control or 'save' something mid-fall -
our reputation, a conversation, a career detour, a moment of embarrassment - can actually make things worse.
We scramble. We overreact.
We contort ourselves to catch 'it' before it lands.
What if the smarter move is to let 'it' fall?
- Let the comment land awkwardly.
- Let the meeting end in silence.
- Let the plan fail.
Let ‘it’ fall and then see where ‘it’ lands.
More often than not, ‘it’ ends up somewhere manageable - maybe unexpected - but somewhere you can still reach.
And if you hadn’t seen ‘it’ with your own eyes, you wouldn’t believe how far it bounced.
So next time something’s slipping through your fingers, ask yourself:
Do I need to catch this?
Or can I let it fall, see where it lands, and deal with it then?
You might save yourself a lot of comedic juggling.
