balance clarity inner critic perspective Apr 19, 2021

Welcome to Weekly Whispers #12

Which whisper did you hear from Week #11?

Did you consider how lucky you’ve been due to your practice…or not?

Did you ignore the hazard of fear?

Did you hit your metaphorical 2nd putt first?

Were you inspired to take up golf? 😊

Here's what’s struck me this week.

1. Clarity precedes just about everything

In most of the recent work I’ve been doing with clients one objective seems to override everything else. If it’s not the first item on the agenda it certainly becomes the first once any discussion starts.

Clarity can arrive in many forms - a thought, an image, a feeling, an aha, a metaphor, a comment, a repeated whisper turning into a shout. Clarity it would appear (no pun intended) gives rise to confidence, energy, action, collaboration and many more things. Something to ponder for you. When you seek clarity, where do you get your clarity from?

2. This talk isn't very good

I loved the title of this TEDx talk, 'This talk isn’t very good”. It immediately encouraged me to click play to find out why! It turns out to be an interesting take on the topic of how to handle one’s inner critic. The one-line summary – don’t try and handle it, try and dance with it 😊

3. The balance between fulfilment and achievement

See beyond the chiselled jaw, sun-tanned skin and the big white teeth of Tony Robbins and you might find some gold in these short clips.

I find myself bouncing between these 2 aspirations often – sometimes they are competing, sometimes they are perfectly aligned. If I work too hard on outer achievement I get burnt out, tired and my performance, and therefore achievement, drops. If I focus only on inner fulfilment I end up not doing much and feeling guilty about not achieving!

Perhaps you’ve found a way to a better balance – love to hear how you’ve done it.

4. Quote of the week: "When I was young I was clever so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I'm seeking to change myself"

On reflection, it probably isn't every time but on many occasions, when I've been confronted or challenged in or by a situation and I've taken time to work on myself, my contribution to the problem changes. Rather than relying on external circumstances changing, I’m relying on my own internal perspective changing and therefore how I’m contributing to the situation. The situation may not change but how I approach it usually does.

Give it a go - how are you contributing to the circumstances you find yourself in?

5. Question of the Week: Is what you're doing worth what it's doing to you?

Are you aware of the longer-term consequences of continuing on your current path – positive or negative?

It might be worth doing in the short term but as you immerse yourself in it it’s easy to forget. Is it worth it for a day, a week, a month, a year but not forever?

5. Freedom Fridays - My weekly experiment with time and focus

My intention is to openly share a change I’m making within my life. I’m hoping you can take the lessons learnt and apply it to any change you want to make.

This week was predominantly all about NOTHING! It was an empty week.

That's all for this week and I hope you enjoyed Weekly Whisper #12.
