Welcome to Whisper #105.

For me, sport is THE reality TV. Here’s one example why:

In the recent NBA Finals Series the Boston Celtics took it to the final game with the Miami Heat with this incredible Derrick White put-back shot with 0.1 second left on the clock to win the game.

The buzzer went before the shot landed but the highlighted image shows the moment the ball left White’s fingers with 0.1 secs left on the clock.

Incredible, unprecedented, unbelievable finish.

Here’s what may have been lost in all the excitement.

The Celtics Marcus Smart attempted a 3 pointer and the ball bounced around the ring before White tipped it back in. Incredibly, White was the furthest from the ring when Smart took the shot.

It would have been so easy to watch and hope but White ran… just in case.

On this occasion, it all worked out and White was the momentary hero.

Watch the clip to see what White does – he’s the Green No.9 - the furthest from the ring when the initial shot was launched.

Despite a basketball court being relatively small compared to other playing fields and therefore the distances covered are smaller.

However, the game is faster and the opponents can challenge for the ball as quickly as a team can attack it.

It’s probable that only a small percentage of ‘Derrick White type’ attempts would succeed but you’ll never know which one might open up another opportunity.

The lesson?

From wherever you are, keep moving. Take a chance and keep going for it – you never know what opportunities might come your way. Maybe not the first one, maybe not the 10th one but if you keep attempting something will surely come your way.

As for the reality? The Heat went on to win the deciding game and progress to the Final so it’s not quite the fairy tale it could have been.

Quote of the week:

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed - Michael Jordan

An oldy but a goody and perfectly aligned with the reality story above.

With millions watching how many would you be willing to miss?
