emotional intelligence focus on you growth mindset mindset shift self reflection Apr 29, 2024

Welcome to Weekly Whisper #146.

Don’t blame the clown for acting like a clown. Ask yourself why you keep going to the circus

I hadn’t seen this quote before and it resonated with me for a few reasons.

- A timely reminder that I can’t change anyone else. How often I notice my internal dialogue “He/She/They should…” only serves to frustrate and cause me angst. I’m sure ‘the clown’ isn’t remotely bothered. Hopefully, they are bothered by other clowns 😊

- I should pay more attention to the agency I have in influencing my own thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Where did the assumption “they should” come from? What right do I have to determine that!

- Sometimes a frustrating reminder that I can’t control every circumstance in my life. Something I’ve been working on is to be more aware of the occasions where I can’t control or influence the random circumstances that happen and practice going along with. Practicing being comfortably detached from the drama.

- Provides an opportunity – sometimes hidden in the moment and only revealed on reflection – to practice the way I want to be in the world e.g. compassionate, generous, wise etc

- A continual reminder of being ‘had’ by my own thoughts. Instead, of the ability to ‘have’ thoughts and therefore be object to them not subject to them allows the ultimate freedom.

- You can substitute ‘clown’ for anyone or anything and then the subsequent ‘circus’ that you attend by giving the ‘clown’ an audience?

How about you? What lessons can you learn from the clown in your life?

Question of the week:
Who (or what) is the clown you keep giving an audience to?

What do you get from regular attendance in the audience?

If you assume there’s a reason for all our behaviours then you might not be aware of the need that is met by attending. What would happen if you missed a week?

Quote of the week:
Someone is mad at you right now because you picked peace over drama and distance over disrespect.

Maybe you’re someone else’s clown 😊
